Description

Inspired by the exposure to household chores during the Covid lockdown, in a team of two we strove to address the home waste disposal system.

We identified key areas of issues and designed a new product concept for a disposal bin - the 'Trashure'.

Contributions

  • Evaluated the home waste management problems

  • Conducted a user survey to identify pain points

  • Identified key areas of improvement and critical issues

  • Ideated on individual concepts

  • Created detailed concepts addressing key issues

Identification

Key problems involving collection and disposal of waste at home were identified.

The general perception of waste management remains icky and discomforting. Probing deeper into this problem, most of the problems arise from the lack of design initiative in disposal bins and the process of passing the garbage forward, definitely in the Indian context.

Typical Home Waste Bins

Research

We designed a survey questionnaire. It was sent to 50+ subjects in the age group of 18-40 years. These subjects were primarily housed in metropolitan cities of India, with the expectation of maximum awareness around garbage disposal and also, financial means.

We evaluated the acquired data on the user experiences with trash including segregation, mode of disposal, willingness to improve the experience and so on.

Survey Highlights

Maximum spend on a trash can per household(Setup and hardware)                                    INR 970 ($13)

How many households employ domestic help to clean and dispose waste?                                  62%

How many households do not segregate waste?                                                                                    67%

How many households dispose waste daily?                                                                                            71%

Building on the key outcomes of the survey, we added our own brainstormed issues with the overall experience to come up with areas requiring improvement. These were further segregated into must-haves and nice-to-haves.

Ideation and Individual Concepts

With the identified root causes and pain points, concepts were generated for individual problems. These dealt with the form, infestation prevention, lid mechanisms and disinfection.

Detailed Design

For a detailed design of our own concept bin, we diverged into two approaches.

  1. Trashure Eco: Designed to be economical and include all necessary product features

  2. Trashure Pro: Was designed for the tech-savvy customers with smart features
